History
Meals on Whels, Etc. began with a small home-delivered meal program in 1973. Since that time, as the older population of Seminole County has grown, so has its' needs, and the agency has responded with an umbrella of services to support this growth.
Core services include:
Home-Delivered Meals
Congregate Meals
Case Management
Nutrition Education
Transportation
Homemaking
Chores, Home Repairs & Weather Proofing
50 employees and over 500 volunteers provide these services. A volunteer Board of Directors meets monthly to set policies.
In 1998, the agency contracted with Seminole County government to provide emergency home repairs for low-income county residents. The contract was successfully completed in 2003. Over 350 homes were made safe through this work. In 2001, we also completed home architectural barrier removal services through a contract with the county.
Seven years ago the agency began operating their own kitchen to improve the quality and taste appeal of senior meals. The kitchen was also established as a business model to raise revenues to offset governmental funding limitations. In the past two years we have expanded the kitchen operation to include food service to the public and private childcares, adult daycares, and most recently, a "fine dining" catering service was established.
Last year we provided thousands of meals to Katrina evacuees through agreements with 211/Heart of Florida United Way and the American Red Cross. We also became the Disaster Relief meal provider for Seminole County Public Safety workers.
